Abstract

:In the 1990s, Australian continuum theorists, represented by Frank Upward, absorbing the structuration theory of Anthony Giddens, proposed the multidimensional, dynamic and macroscopic records continuum theory, which further sublimated the continuum method summarized from practice into a conceptual model with space-time structure. It is beyond the scope of official records and archives management practices and highly summarizes recordkeeping behavior in human society of all forms. Therefore, the four coordinates, which are (Archival)document, Record(s), Archive, and Archives on the axis of recordkeeping containers in the records continuum model are endowed with different conceptual connotations from practice. Based on the correct understanding of four core terms, this paper points out that it is insufficient to understand the records continuum theory only from the perspective of Chinese archival management practice, which deviates from its theoretical idea of continuum. Specifically, the misinterpretation is reflected in the understanding of concept of “continuum”, the relationship between the records continuum theory and both the records life cycle theory and the law of records movement.
